Mechwarrior 2: Music
Local Ditch Gaming > Mechwarrior 2 > Mechwarrior 2: Music
Mechwarrior 2 would not be what it is without its iconic soundtrack. The visuals were great for the time, the Battletech lore and background was immersive, the combination of simulation and action was superb.
But, it's the music that puts Mechwarrior 2 on another level. A combination of rythmic, tribal-like industrial pounding combined with cold synthesizers, harsh samples, deep bass bursts and occasional orchestral overtones made the worlds of Mechwarrior 2 seems so alien, yet simultaneously ominous.
Combine that with a game that allows for plenty of "breathing room" travelling from nav point to nav point and leaving space and time to listen to the music, mix in the soft gradients and various color palettes of each planet, and you've got an instant mood.
There's not much here at the moment (insert the old "under construction" sign), so check out these links in the meantime!
You can listen and buy Greg Alpers contributions to the Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack (and a bunch of demos and rarities) at Bandcamp. Go check it out!
Here's an article about Jeehun Hwang from the always-awesome Sound on Sound in 1998. Super interesting if you're at all into music production.
